Company: | Sabre Holdings Corporation |
Product: | Sabre for Windows 4.5G and Companions |
Category: | Terminal Emulation |
Problems: | 16-bit Windows application which requires write access to the root of %systemdrive% (Usually C:\SABRE) and requires write access to files and folders in %windir% (aliased to %systemroot%, usually C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT)
%systemroot% is off-limits to limited users by default |
Workarounds: | Despite its 16-bit design, Sabre for Windows is easier to support than the MySabre Portal in a network environment. Home users and single users should use the MySabre Portal instead.
WARNING: These instructions require above-average skills - you will be modifying several configuration files.
1) Install the latest Service Pack for your version of Windows, at least Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000, or Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, to ensure the Master Installation Launcher works correctly
2) Install Sabre for Windows and additional components as needed, as normally instructed by Sabre
3) After restarting, change the following settings in %systemroot%\sabre.ini:
[SFW]
UserDir=x:\SABRE
[SABRECalc]
sCalculatorTapePath=x:\SABRE
"x" may be a local drive (usually C:) or a network home drive (usually H: or Z:) if you wish to support per-user settings
4) Copy the following files and folders from %systemroot% to your new UserDir:
qdata (folder)
sabsite.ini
sv.ini
sabaddin.mac
svinit.mac
default.pfk
default.sft
sabre.sft
import.wmp
Also create a folder called:
apps
5) Edit all files you have copied to change any references to C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT to your new UserDir path
6) If you used a network home drive for UserDir, copy your new SABRE folder to all users in your network
7) Configure the connection to Sabre as normal and supply a valid Terminal Address (TA) - only Administrators will be allowed to change this setting - and test Sabre
8) Grant Modify access for the built-in Users local group to the following folder:
%systemdrive%\SABRE (usually C:\SABRE)
9) A limited user may now use Sabre for Windows - test with a limited account to verify. If you used a network path, verify that all user-configurable settings are saved per-user.
Networked computers using Sabre for Windows require unique terminal addresses, but the addresses do not need to follow the users around the network.
Computers running Sabre Print Module in addition to Sabre for Windows do not require any special attention, but only administrators will be able to configure Sabre Print Module. It will then run as a Windows Service. |
